چکیده

The degree of 137 Cs root uptake into tropical fruits, vegetables and native foliage from coral atoll soils in the Marshall Islands has been quantified using soil-to-plant transfer factors. Transfer factor values for different plants on Bikini Island (Bikini Atoll) range between 0.2 and 144 and, in general, are considerably higher than those observed in continental soils. In this paper we will attempt to summarize available data on soil-to-plant transfer factors and examine some of the fundamental processes controlling the mobility and availability of Cs in coral atoll soils.

Radiation doses for Marshall Islands Atolls affected by U.S. nuclear testing: all exposure pathways, remedial measures, and environmental loss of (137)Cs.

Radiation doses calculated for people resettling Bikini Island at Bikini Atoll, Enjebi Island at Enewetak Atoll, Rongelap Island at Rongelap Atoll, and Utrōk Island at Utrōk Atoll are presented. Residence is assumed to begin in 2010. In previous dose assessments it was shown that (137)Cs accounts for about 98% of the total dose for returning residents. About 85 to 90% (depending on the atoll) i...

137Cs soil-to-plant transfer for individual species in a semi-natural grassland. Influence of potassium soil content.

In the present study we assessed the radiocaesium uptake by plants in order to piece together information on factors affecting the uptake processes, particularly K supply and plant species differences. Vegetation uptake from soil contaminated by the Chernobyl accident was compared at two semi-natural grasslands. The Cs/K discrimination factor (DF), which is often used to evaluate a plant's effi...

بررسی مقادیر فرسایش و تلفات خاک در سطح کشور با استفاده از ارقام اندازه‌گیری شده روش سزیم 137 و پلات‌های آزمایشی

Soil erosion is a serious issue in Iran. Determining the rate of soil erosion in various regions could help for better understanding of the erosion condition and soil conservation planning as well. In accordance with this constraint, more than 840 measured values derived from Cs-137 method and experimental plots in 31 research sites countrywide were collected, and analyzed related to differen...

Soil erosion modelled with USLE and PESERA using QuickBird derived vegetation parameters in an alpine catchment

The focus of soil erosion research in the Alps has been in two categories: (i) on-sitemeasurements, which are rather small scale point measurements on selected plots often constrained to irrigation experiments or (ii) off-site quantification of sediment delivery at the outlet of the catchment. Results of both categories pointed towards the importance of an intact vegetation cover to prevent soi...

Remote sensing for urban heat and cool islands evaluation in semi-arid areas

Cities are experiencing rapid population growth and consequently extensive urbanization. Land-use/land-cover change is one of the important elements worldwide, which significantly affect the environment. This study aims to describe the emergence of urban heat and cool islands as a result of changes in land-use/land-cover. Land surface temperature over a 32-year period in Isfahan city, Iran was ...
